Born in Scotland, Helen Costigane attended the University of Glasgow, and studied History and Politics. Moving to London, she completed a Diploma in Management while working in marketing, then joined one of the-then Big 4 accountancy firms, qualifying as a chartered accountant. After joining the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, she studied at Heythrop College, gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Pastoral Theology (with distinction), and an M.Th. in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, While working in the charity sector, she then studied for a PhD in Christian Ethics part-time over a number of years. Not having suffered enough, and discovering the beauty of canon law, she continued study in this field, gaining an M.A. in Canon Law (with congratulatory distinction) at Heythrop College. She then continued part-time study at K U Leuven, in Belgium, for a JCL (Licentiate in Canon Law, magna cum laude), with a thesis entitled ‘Clerical Sexual Misconduct: Is There Another Way Forward?’, and a JCD (Doctorate in Canon Law), with a thesis on the temporal goods of the Church. Helen has taught at Heythrop College over a number of years, being involved in Christian Ethics, Pastoral Theology, and latterly Canon Law. She has also had teaching experience as a visiting lecturer at a number of institutions - St Mary’s College, Strawberry Hill, (Theology and Management Studies); Institute of Ecumenical Studies, Charles University, Prague, (Christian Ethics); Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln, (Charity Management); Birkbeck College, (Christian Ethics), University of Notre Dame, Indiana, in London (Business Ethics); Margaret Beaufort Institute, Cambridge (Canon Law).
