Gender: sex and gender

A Level

5m 50s
What is the difference between sex and gender? In this podcast we consider to what extent aspects of gender behaviour may be either biologically influenced, or learned through sex-role stereotypes. We also look at androgyny (shared characteristics) and ask to what extent it is beneficial.

Sex and gender - task

  • Listen to the following podcast in pairs

  • One of each pair should compose two questions that they would ask the speakers about:

a] sex-role stereotypes

b] the influence of the media on sex-role stereotyping

c] androgyny

  • Read the questions out aloud, one by one, to the other person in the pair, who should reply using information contained within the podcast

  • You can alternate composing and asking questions and giving answers if you like, so that both members of the pair get a go at both tasks

  • You may find that you need to listen to the podcast more than once to achieve this
