What are the main themes of the period? The French Revolution was one of the greatest events in the history of Europe. It led to changes in the political institutions and ideas that have affected the world ever since. It led to years of warfare which changed the face of Europe. It also led to the emergence of Napoleon first as a dictator then as an Emperor. The period from 1789 saw violent, sometimes very shocking and dramatic events and the rise of larger than life historical figures.
