An Inspector Calls is 1 of 3 sections of the Modern Text and Prose paper of your English Literature GCSE. The Modern Text and Prose paper makes up 60% of your GCSE. 

Students will be given a choice of 2 essay titles to choose from on J.B. Priestley's play An Inspector Calls and will be expected to answer 1 of these 2 choices.

The Modern Text and Prose exam will last 2 hours and 15 minutes so it is suggested that you take around 40-45 minutes on this part of the exam.

 

Assessment Objectives for English Literature GCSE

Assessment objectives (AOs) are set by Ofqual and are the same across allGCSE English Literature specifications and all exam boards.

The exams will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.

  • AO1: Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to:
    • maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response
    • use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.
  • AO2: Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.
  • AO3: Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.
  • AO4: Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation.
