Chapter 6 is a classic Sherlock Holmes installment, in which the famed consulting detective gets a chance to display his incredible talent for deduction and discovery. Particularly important point in the story as it highlights to the reader how Sherlock's intelligence is not only powerful but possibly dangerous. It also sets up the reading audience to begin to wonder for themselves what dastardly things a mind like Sherlock's may be able to commit should they choose to bat for the other team...There is also a commentary upon the dangers of the narcotics trade during the late nineteenth century in which opium imports and various other dangerous substances from across the Empire had come to threaten the health of the British public. The painful death of Bartholomew serves not only as another mystery to be solved, but serves as a stark warning against the threat of invasive foreign substances and cultures.
