In this chapter we see the introduction of Miss Mary Morstan, and from Conan Doyle's description of her we can quickly identify that she is a classic 'damsel in distress'. She is described as a "Blonde young lady, small, dainty, well-gloved and dressed in the most perfect taste". This presents her as the ideal Victorian woman...Here we discover that Holmes is fascinated by the facts of the case - the forensic evidence and the physical clues left for us by Mary's strange "unknown friend", but Watson is far more interested in the human side of the case.
